Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are some common reasons people get into therapy?
It varies, of course, but often counselling helps people navigate difficult life situations. It can provide the tools and insights to manage these challenges more effectively. Some common reasons people seek counselling include: Past or present trauma. Anxiety, depression, worry and stress, including health anxieties, eco-anxiety, phobias, PTSD, separation or social anxiety. Challenges around bereavement, grief and loss. Challenges related to illness, chronic illness, accidents or surgery. Low confidence and self-esteem. Relationship problems - romantic, family, friendships, and work-related. Addiction and substance use. A desire to live with more ease, love and connection.
  • I’m nervous about seeing a counsellor.
Stop for a moment and check in with yourself. What are you nervous about? What’s stopping you? Does that same thing show up in other areas of your life? That might be a great place to begin a conversation with a counsellor.
  • Does WISE MOUNTAIN Counselling offer sessions in-person or online?
I offer sessions both online and in-person.
  • What will my friends and family think?
Your friends and family will only find out you are seeing a counsellor if YOU tell them. Sessions and the counselling relationship are completely confidential.
  • Are therapists different from counsellors?
The words counsellor, therapist, and psychotherapist are all considered to be the same and can be used interchangeably.
  • How quickly does counselling work?
Counselling rarely leads to instant solutions. It provides you with an opportunity to more clearly understand yourself and your situation. Often, this can lead to a shifting of beliefs or behaviours that have been contributing to the challenges in your life. This can take time, so… give it some time. A trusting relationship with a therapist doesn’t always happen quickly. However, that relationship is really important if you are going to feel safe enough to take some deep dives to where trauma and important challenges often lie.
  • Should I try therapy?
Only you can answer that question. There are lots of different reasons to start therapy, but only you can decide if it is the right thing to do at this time. And… why not give it a try - you’ve come this far. Get in touch, see how that goes, do an initial consultation and see how that goes, etc. Baby steps are great steps to take.
  • How do I get in contact with you and get started?
Use any of the `Get in Touch' buttons on the website to say Hi and send me a note. I will answer quickly.
  • What are the different types of counsellor?
There are five main types - Psychodynamic Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychoanalytic Therapy and Integrative or Holistic Therapy. There are many schools of therapy within each category. I am an integrated therapist and use techniques from a range of different approaches.
  • Does therapy work for everyone?
Psychotherapy is often effective in improving lives. Therapy can allow for an emotional outlet without having to worry about burdening friends or family in ways they may not be able to handle. It’s rare to find a space where you can share everything and anything that is on your mind or in your heart. It can be very helpful and beautiful. However, that process can be hindered if you are not completely honest, both with yourself and the counsellor. It takes courage and vulnerability to make it work and that doesn’t always happen, leading to results that are not as deep and powerful as they could be.
